Work and Projects

Work

After retiring in 1998, Ieuan made his initial steps towards his new life beyond the playing field. With a well-natured personality, and renowned as a personable character, Ieuan chose a career in PR and communications. Just as with his sporting career, Ieuan quickly developed himself to be an astute broadcaster for Sky Sports, as well as an in-demand blog writer for a variety of newspapers and websites ranging from the Telegraph to the BBC.

Away from broadcasting, Ieuan has held non-executive and ambassadorial positions for Blue Chip companies, including Serco, where he was a Business Development Director, RBS, Accenture and Monitise, among others, where he developed and delivered leadership programmes by leveraging his knowledge of various leadership styles and techniques from his sporting background. In addition, Ieuan was also a board member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on the Economy and Transport, the Wales Tourist Board, Visit Britain, Ryder Cup Wales and has chaired the Nominet Wales Advisory Group. Ieuan also uses his invaluable marketing and communications experience to promote all that is Welsh.

Projects and charitable work

Ieuan also contributes significant time and effort to a number of worthy charitable causes:

Help for Heroes

Ieuan contributed to a charity match in 2010, managing an International XV against an England XV at the home of English Rugby, Twickenham, raising thousands of pounds to help provide better facilities for British servicemen and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty.

Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation

Ieuan is one of the patrons of Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, who have lent their skills, time and resources to support the ground-breaking research of the organisation that has raised approximately £2.5 million towards developing a cure for spinal injury.

Velindre Cancer Centre

Ieuan has been actively involved in supporting Velindre Cancer Centre Wales, one of the largest cancer centres in the UK. In 2010, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the ‘Captains Climb’ which saw 15 past captains of the Welsh Rugby team climb one of the tallest mountains on the planet, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds toward the work of the centre.

Prostate Cymru

Ieuan is also involved in Prostate Cymru, a fast-moving, driven and effective charity dedicated to fighting prostate cancer, procuring equipment and raising awareness in Wales. As part of the charity, Ieuan has supported A Knight with the Captains – an event set up to raise funds and awareness of Prostate Cymru’s work.

St John’s Ambulance

As a St John’s Ambulance Ambassador, Ieuan has played a key role, leading the charity’s First Aid for Sport Campaign. He has also championed St John Wales’ new training course catered specifically for WRU volunteers.

Since 1991, Sparks have invested more than £27 million into over 275 cutting-edge research projects across the UK. Ieuan took part in the charity’s Rugby Legends fund-raising event – one of many, aimed at ensuring every child’s best possible start in life.
